Every number in postal codes has its own unique identity. There are overall nine postal zones in India, It includes eight regional zones and one functional zone is kept for the Indian Army. The first number represents the zone of the country, the second number represents the sub-region and the third number signifies the district. The rest numbers represent the location of the post office. This gives a unique identity to all physical addresses of the country which helps the department in terms of post office jurisdiction.
India Post plans to introduce a 12-digit unique code called DAC(Digital Address Code)for every house in India based on geo coordinates.
